Reliving Memories In Germany

We're at the end of the first year, so we only had one long weekend left for some traveling. We decided it was finally time to check out Frankfurt. So we booked flights to Luxembourg, cause it was cheaper and Frankfurt isn't far at all. We're just crossing off countries one weekend at a time!

Once again, we picked up our rental car and drove to see a bit of Luxembourg before going to Frankfurt. Alastair's family lived there for a time, so it was fun to place the location to the memory. Like, in Luxembourg, we went to these old tunnels where Alastair's family went. Emre was pretty scared, he thought there were going to be dragons. So he had Alastair hold him the whole time. We walked around a bit while Alastair bid online for next year's classes.

The next day was spent touring Frankfurt via bikes. After spending some time finding a parking spot, we walked to a corner store and grabbed some stroopwafels. We love those things! We rented the bikes and set off for a ride along the river. I was really impressed with the quality of the bike and now want one in Barcelona! It was fun to ring our little bells and ride past others strolling along the river. We went over a bridge and made our way to the town center. Lots of shopping and German architecture.

After making a stop to buy a sweater for Emre (didn't take into account the wind chill), we rode to the dinosaur museum. I thought it would be fun to take Emre since he loves dinosaurs. When we got there, we saw the price of the tickets and couldn't justify the price. I mean, anything over free is too expensive. Ha! Thankfully, Emre understood why we couldn't go in and we just enjoyed the t Rex and brontosaurus structures outside the museum. We hopped back onto our bikes and took the train to a town outside Frankfurt. Can't remember the name, but it's where the McKee's lived.

We rode around the neighborhood and found a little park for Emre to play. After that, we went to a kebab place. That's what I was looking forward to! After a long day of riding, it was nice to sit and enjoy some delicious food! After filling our bellies, we rode back to Frankfurt, which was 45 minutes away. We mostly rode through fields and parks. Unfortunately, my allergies were a whole other level of terrible! I've never had it so bad, despite taking a pill. My eyes were so puffy, throat sore, runny nose, the works! It was pretty miserable but I wanted to get past it because I really enjoyed riding! We did one last ride along the river to enjoy the sunset.

The next day was Sunday and Alastair wanted to attend the ward he was in and see if he remembered anyone. He knew a few people and it was nice for him to catch up! Unfortunately, Emre was restless and he didn't let me enjoy being in an English speaking ward. It's much easier to get more out of church when you're not spending the majority of the time trying to translate.

After church, we went to Heidelberg, a more traditional German town. I absolutely loved the place! Unfortunately, Emre was still having an off day, so he made it less enjoyable. And Alastair hurt his back from riding the day before and his kebab might have upset his stomach, and my eye was leaking tears from the allergies the day before… so it was a lot to deal with. Regardless, the place was adorable. Traditional buildings, wooden crafts, a castle on the hill, it was all so beautiful! We ended our day early, resting and recovering in our hotel.

We didn't really know where we wanted to spend our last day, so Alastair Google searched and found a place in France called Metz. We had never heard of it and it sounded like a place that could be fun. So glad we decided to go because we all loved it! Metz oozes with French flair! We spent most of our time walking along the river, admiring the rowboats, snapping pictures, and taking our time. Unfortunately, Emre had quite the fall, bonking his head on the ground and cutting up his knee. So he wanted to be held for a bit. It was the hottest day and unfortunately, we didn't dress to well for it. We had Emre play at a park for a bit and I was burning up following him around. By the time we were done playing, we needed a drink! We found our way to a garden and rested on the grass by a fountain. Snapped some pics of flowers and continued on. Most places were closed, due to the holiday, but the trust Mackers was open! We ate and then walked around the town. We found ourselves inside a cathedral, which was impressive! The stained glass was beautiful, each unique. Emre even enjoyed walking around and looking at the glass.

After the cathedral, we made our way to Luxembourg for our flight home. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed two hours. We made it home around 2 am. Extremely tired but it was all worth it!
