Mackinac Island

Conference weekend, we decided to head up to the upper peninsula to see all the colorful leaves. We've wanted to go to mackinac island and pictured rock, but we didn't think we could squeeze it all in just a weekend. We decided to go to pictured rock.
Once we arrived, we decided to find a hotel for the night. Every hotel was booked, no vacancy signs on EVERY door. It was so frustrating and we couldn't camp cause it was way too cold! I was so bummed! We decided to head back to mackinac island, which was quite a distance away. We grabbed snacks for the road, changed Emre's diaper, fed him, then headed back to mackinac city. It was really late and so Alastair and I asked each other questions about our childhood to keep each other awake. It was pretty fun to share memories of when we were kids! We arrived at the hotel pretty late and slept pretty well.
We woke up whenever we finally felt like it and headed out to mackinac island on a speed boat. With Emre being a little tired and the roar of the engine, he fell asleep on the boat! The same thing happened when we went back!
Once we landed, we strolled around the Main Street and the shoreline. There are no cars allowed on the island, so there are bikers and horse drawn carriages. All the hotels and houses have that New England vibe going on, with white wooden lawn chairs on the grass and rocking chairs on the porch. The weather was quite cool, so we all bundled up pretty well, especially Emre!
We called his stroller Mars rover with the plastic cover and his snowsuit. I'm so glad we brought his stroller and the plastic cover! The only thing we didn't bring were gloves, so of course, we grabbed hot chocolate and hot cider to keep our hands warm! A few hours into walking around, we decided to get lunch.
We ate at this super small restaurant, which was packed! A good rule to live by: if it's packed it generally means that the food is good. We chose wisely, it was so good! We walked around a bit more, window shopped, and snapped lots of photos.
We eventually decided to leave and drove straight home, making good time! We really enjoyed the island, which made up for the bummer experience of pictured rock. We'll definitely go back, and hopefully we'll stay in one of those cute hotels!
