Iceland: Southern Coast

Iceland day three: Alastair's day. A few months ago it was a picture of a south coast town named Vík that made me really excited about Iceland. Upon further study of things to do in Iceland, the most exciting seemed to be Jökulsárlón, a glacier lagoon about four and a half hours from Reykjavík. Day three was the all-important day for both places to be experienced.

We headed out early, about 7am, and by the time the sun came up at around 9:30, we were already in Vík. We took some pictures of a beautiful church and the "trolls" in the ocean, but headed off quickly because we wanted to be at the glacier lagoon earlier. We planned on coming back to Vík later on.

The drive to Jökulsárlón was long, but very beautiful. We passed through lava fields, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, even the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano from the Secret Life of Walter Mitty movie. We passed through patches of light rain, heavy rain, fog, and sunshine, and finally arrived at our destination.

The glacier lagoon was really foggy, which is unfortunate, since it was crystal clear 20 minutes before, but such is life, and such is Iceland. The glacier lagoon itself was incredible. Water that has been frozen in time for thousands of years floating on Iceland's biggest lake. The glaciers were all blue, all different shapes and sizes, and it was quite awe-inspiring. We battled the elements, strong wind and fine rain that soaked us to the bone. After getting our fill of the glaciers, we stepped into a little cafe for a waffle and a postcard, before heading to the glacier beach.

The glacier beach was incredible, smaller glaciers, big chunks of ice strewn all over the black sand beach. We'd have loved to have spent more time on that beach, taking pictures and soaking it all in, but since we were soaked enough and daylight was burning, we got back in the car and headed to Vík.

After a couple of hours, we pulled in to Vík to take a stroll in the black sand and see the trolls and rock formations on the cliff. It was another case of nature being really cool. Definitely another place we would love to see again one day, possibly in the summer when there is 24 hours of daylight as opposed to seven!

Day three was a great day! A lot of driving and a lot of beautiful scenery, and a lot of time hanging out, just the two of us. It is always nice to spend time with Lain. It is even nicer when we are driving around a new place, seeing new, exciting, and memorable things.
