Cape Town: Land's End & Surfing

One of the biggest reasons for wanting to visit Cape Town was to drive a little south and see the Cape of Good Hope. We didn't really know much about it, other than that it was important enough to be signposted on a distance/direction sign post in Hong Kong. We just had to visit.

It turns out that the Cape of Good Hope is the most south-western point of the African continent. There were a surprising number of tourists who came out to stare at the rocks and ocean at this geographically significant location. The Cape of Good Hope must have been important for sailers back in the day. Alastair and Connor wanted to get to the most south-western point, and so left the sign post and the car park and climbed over the wet rocks to get out to the furthest part of land that they could. There isn't really much else to say apart from that it was a beautiful place, and being there felt like an accomplishment to us!

Next, we drove north up to Muizenberg, a place known for its surfing. We had never done it before, but decided to make do with a 3 minute youtube tutorial and skip out on a formal lesson. We rented our boards, and made a trade with a surfing woman on the beach: we told her the time if she would give us a quick surfing lesson right there on the beach.

After about two minutes we were good to go, and headed out into the waves of False Bay. Alastair summed up the experience thus: "It isn't as easy as it looks, and it looks hard!" Alastair ended up standing about two times in one whole hour, even if the photos make him appear to be decent. Surfing was tough, we were terrible, but it was a blast to give it a go.

About five minutes in, Alastair lost his phone. It has its waterproof case on, so that we could get some cool photos as we failed repeatedly, but it was knocked out of hands by a strong wave and never recovered. This was one of those "ah well" moments. We looked for about fifteen minutes before deciding that we could let the loss of a phone define our Cape Town surfing experience, or we could just let it go and do our best to have fun.

Muizenberg has some really cool beach changing huts. We weren't able to go in them, but it was a lot of fun to walk around and enjoy their colors. They are really picturesque and quite iconic, so we soaked them in after drip drying from out surfing experience. We had an absolutely fantastic day in and around False Bay. Being there, it was crazy to think that we were still in Africa. It is not what you expect when you think of South Africa, but it was just amazing.
