A lot of people complain about the beds over here, that they're too hard. But for us, we can't complain. It's true, our beds are hard, the pillows aren't fluffy, and the sheets don't stay on the bed. However, we sleep like rocks! It just goes to show that you don't need to sleep on a fluffy cloud to get a good night's sleep. Except for one night...
It was about 3 in the morning when I stirred. I felt like something had bit me, but I wasn't too sure because I was unconscious. So I went back to sleep. A few minutes later I woke because my upper lip felt a little funny. I abruptly got up to check in the mirror to see what the matter was. To my surprise, my lip had puffed up drastically! I freaked out and woke Alastair up. He then comforted me and we both checked WebMD to see what my problem was (I always check this site for all our medical needs). It didn't help. Alastair surfed the web a little longer as I iced my upper lip with a frozen piece of bread. We left the apartment to see if the nurse was in her office. We walked around the building and called for anyone....no response. After a few attempts of peeking into windows like burglars, we went back to the apartment and drifted off to sleep.
The alarm rang and I ran to the mirror to see if the swelling had gone down. It was worse. The swelling had reached its potential and I was stuck looking like a duck. There was nothing much I could do, so I fixed my makeup to feel a little more beautiful. I figured there were worse things that could happen, so I quit the sour attitude and went on with life. Alastair took care of my first two classes as my liaison and I went to the hospital. The doctor told us (in Chinese) that the inflammation was due to an allergic reaction. All she could do was prescribe medicine that they didn't have. So I ended up taking some medicine with antihistamine and some vitamin C. I finished off my day teaching my classes and waiting for the swelling to go down. The next day, it was almost back to normal. Evidence now shows where that pesky little mosquito bit me. The best part of all this is that I have a photo to remember all this!
